Pin Prick pieces


















I began pin-pricking old postcards I had found in Kazimierz market in Krakow and started to pin-prick according to tonality within the images. I however quickly progressed to the film photographs I had taken of light blurs by the Quayside in Newcastle in January before I had arrived in Krakow. I became interested in the layering of drawings, and how I considered my film photographic pieces as drawings in themselves, and so to pin-prick over the photograph was to draw over an existing drawing. The pin-pricks look as if I have almost graffitied or scribbled over the photographic drawing, with the background lighting illuminating/ highlighting certain details of the drawing tonally as if you would with the intensity of pencil tonality.

I worked on different papers including transparent film, tin foil, black and white card to notice the different effects and how the light worked with the various materials. I prefer the tin foil pieces, as the reflective quality could be manipulated further, they are also tremendously fragile and after the process of displaying and photographing the pieces are now damaged, and the pin - prick details unrecognisable.

I worked from smaller scale work, including the pin -prick negative pieces (see City Lights page), A5 with the photo prints, A4 with the paper and A3 and A2 with the tin foil and digital photographs. as I carry on with this work over summer I want to dramatically increase the scale of the pieces to fill an entire room and play with artificial light and coloured filters in the background to the work.
